I requested to speak to the University Filmmakers Alliance at The University of Texas at Austin.

I received my masters in radio, television and film there in 2007. This is a 37.1MB download. Enjoy.

Spammers

Wow. No idea getting a drupal blog and forum going would attract so much attention from spiders and spammers. If you are interested in this site, google me and find me elsewhere so I can be ready for your registration. There's no chance of your info going anywhere here, but there is a great chance I'll delete your request for a password when it comes in. Sorry.

College Radio

It has come to my attention to gather some thoughts on college radio.
"How to Save College Radio", panel at SXSW in Austin, Texas March 19, 2011. The sale of the frequencies of college radio stations KTRU and KUSF has sparked controversy, protest and an examination of the value of radio licenses held by colleges and universities. Why are institutions unloading these assets? Audio only from SXSW site:

The Fayette County Record

Thanks to The Fayette County Record of LaGrange, Texas for running a little bit in the paper about our meeting! I talked to Ralph, John and Arnold at the meeting. We mentioned possibly airing city council meetings, farm and ranch programming, antique festival news and how that relates to a "local advisory board". We talked about dance halls and the big MS150 bike ride that happens once a year. People wanted to know their roles and about tax deductions for donations. Since LaGrange is a small town I learned that folks are sensitive to be activily backing something with the possibility of it failing. Wise words.

We stopped by Bistro 108 for an excellent seafood dinner and then drove by The Bugle Boy heading north back to Austin. The Bugle Boy is a concert hall with a non-profit foundation supporting its activities.

Thanks for the visit and looking forward to what we can all do together!

Radio Meeting + South by South West

I'll be participating in a public meeting about radio at the end of the month in LaGrange, Texas. I've reached out to a couple people to let them know about it but more work can be done in getting the word out. Let me know if you know any central Texans interested in radio.

South by South West begins today and runs for 10 days. It is the annual music, film, and interactive conference and festival held in Austin, TX.

I will be editing video for the festival's youtube site. Last year we had 1 million views by the end of March.

Forum is launched

I was just asked what the difference is between a forum and a list (discussion group). A discussion group rolls on day by day as people discuss all aspects of a subject at the same time. There is no real way to sort, index and organize the information. There is also no way for a beginner to get the back story or learn from the group members' posts on their own. A forum allows specific topics to be posted and discussed. People won't be discussing everything all the time. The forum will be designed to build a sort of institutional memory or maybe wiki-like index of definitions, terms, people, places and events. Something charting the evolution of LPFM radio. A forum will never be able to be dynamic like a discussion list in terms of people responding and adding to discussion immediately and quickly, but it is another way to organize and share!

Mixer at Third Coast Activist Resource Center, Austin, TX

It is an exciting time and I've come up with a few personal understandings off the top of my head:

1. The public needs a diverse media diet.
2. "social" "media" is not working.
3. Radio is hyper local.
4. You shouldn't do radio alone.

I just went to a mixer at the Third Coast Activist Resource Center which houses the Workers Defense Project. I talked to Robert Jensen, UT Journalism professor, Carlos, with the Center as well as a couple other people in attendance. I asked Robert about doing an event there in hopes of finding out who is applying for LPFM licenses locally. Robert said to contact him for a proposal form to book that space. I plan to do that but need to come up with an agenda and need some people to show up.  As always sooner is better than later in terms of finding key players but I also want to have time to get the word out.

1. We want to know who is interested in radio locally
2. We want to know who is paying for engineering studies
3. We want to know results of engineering studies
4. We want to know what the application looks like and how to fill it out
5. We want to be ready when the application window opens

Local Community Radio Act of 2009 passes!

Thanks to everyone who saw this through. Radio is a field that involves researchers in community media, engineering, as well as law and policy. It involves practitioners drawn by the technical aspects, the craft of on air performance or perhaps advocating for a church or social justice issue. This law raises all ships.
